North Olympic Timber Action Proposal for Working Forests & Wilderness

Starting with the Wild Olympics Campaign proposal NOTAC has consistently promoted an alternative that includes most of the wilderness and wild and scenic river proposals in HR 5995 and S3229, but with the addition of legislatively delineated "Working Forests" that were lost in the Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP). Under the NWFP, Working Forests were identified as Matrix Forests on all national forests except the Olympic National Forest. By enlisting the collective local knowledge from many local individuals who worked on the Olympic National Forest, NOTAC has delineated Matrix forest lands to be included in the legislation. These Matrix Forest lands will restore some of the Working Forests and associated family wage jobs lost in the NWFP, will allow commercial timber sales to provide revenue for road maintenance and stream restoration, will provide a long term log supply to encourage infrastructure maintenance and investment, and will allow the application Ecological Forestry* to provide important habitat diversity and forest health resilience. This proposal is made to supplement the use of Stewardship Contracts for timber harvest that are designed to restore late successional habitat but do little for family wage jobs and infrastructure.
